Film Scanning

With seven scanners running, Colorlab is equipped to transfer film in a variety of formats and conditions. We scan up to 5K resolution, offer liquid gate transfers, and can often capture imagery from brittle or damaged films. Our lab works with 8mm, Super-8mm, 9.5mm, 16mm, 17.5mm, 28mm, and 35mm film.

DFT Spirit 4K DataCine

The Spirit DataCine utilizes continuous transport motion, using a capstan and constant film tension. With excellent image quality it's perfect for newly shot camera films, newly created intermediates, and archival material in good condition.

  • 16mm and 35mm only
  • Equipped with liquid-gate
  • 4K, 2K, & HD

Lasergraphics ScanStation 5K

A sprocketless transport design, the ScanStation can record images at 5K resolution. The design allows for shrunken or otherwise compromised film to be scanned. Archival material and home movies are often run on our ScanStation.

  • 8mm, Super8mm, 16mm, 17.5mm, and 35mm
  • Can capture 4K at 30FPS
  • 5K scan resolution for finishing in 4K, UHD, 2K, or HD

Kinetta Archival Scanner

A uniquely gentle transport, curved gates, and adjustable tension allows the Kinetta to capture highly compromised film. We use it to scan replasticized films, both archival film and home movies.

  • 8mm, Super8mm, 9.5mm, 16mm, 17.5mm, 28mm, 35mm
  • Auto perf-based stabilization
  • 3.3K scan resolution for finishing in 2K or HD

Custom Preservation Wetgate Film Scanner

Equipped with a gravity driven liquid-gate system and a slow sprocketless transport, our own preservation scanner is for damaged, scratched and decaying films. Older film including nitrate and severly damaged prints and original are typically what is running on this machine.

  • 8mm, Super8mm, 9.5mm, 16mm, 17.5mm, 28mm, 35mm
  • Liquid-gate for scratch removal
  • 3.5K scan resolution for finishing in 2K or HD
